The Astor Place Theatre is located in the historic Colonnade Row, originally constructed in 1831 as a series of nine connected buildings, of which only four remain. Designed in Greek revival style, and fronted by imposing marble columns, the buildings served as residences for Astors and Vanderbilts, and are among the oldest buildings in the city. They were designated as New York City Landmarks in 1963. The theater first opened its doors under the direction of Bruce Mailman on January 17, 1968. The theater seats 300.

Atlantic Theater Company is committed to the development of new plays by both emerging and established playwrights alike, and supports new work from simple words on the page into a fully realized production. Atlantic Stage 2 is integral to the mission of the Atlantic Theater Company and home to the New Play Development and Production Program, which has produced 11 new works since its establishment in 2003. Some of these works include Almost an Evening by Ethan Coen, Body Awareness by Annie Baker, What's That Smell: The Music of Jacob Sterling by David Pittu, and most recently, Oohrah! by Bekah Brunstetter. In addition to full productions, Atlantic presents its annual Next Page Reading Series, which has included work by playwrights such as Lucy Thurber, Hilly Hicks, Ken Weitzman and many more.

Atlantic Theater Company is an award-winning Off Broadway theater dedicated to producing great plays simply and truthfully utilizing an artistic ensemble. Since its inception in 1982, the company has produced more than 100 plays, including the hit musical Spring Awakening, the Tony Award-winning production of The Beauty Queen of Leenane by Martin McDonagh, and the 20th Anniversary Broadway revival of David Mamet's Speed-The-Plow.
