It houses the internationally known Barnard Center for Research on Women, the LeFrak Gymnasium, aerobics/dance studios, an indoor pool and weight room, and seminar rooms, including the Held Lecture Hall.

The library has two public floors, with a children's room and a young adult section, large circulating collections of talking book and braille materials that mirror collections in traditional neighborhood public libraries, specialized audio playback equipment for listening to recorded books and magazines, and adaptive technology. Fiction and nonfiction selections range from classics to bestsellers in many subject areas. There is also a meeting room for concerts, lectures and other special events. Public programs are barrier-free and are open to the public, free of charge.

Entry to events at the hall is usually granted through purchasing the New York Botanical Garden's All-Garden Pass.

Altschul Hall is located in the center of campus across from The Diana Center. The Altschul Atrium features: large windows, high ceilings, flexible seating, an exhibition space and two small meeting rooms.
