ABC No Rio
The ABC No Rio Zine Library contains over 12,000 publications. The collection includes independent, underground and marginal publications on subjects such as music, culture, politics, personal experience and travel. This project began in the Spring of 1998 when ABC NO Rio rescued the Blackout Zine Library from a squat in the South Bronx which was to be evicted. Since then numerous individuals have donated their personal collections, and zine editors and publishers regularly send the library issues.
The collection is ongoing, with a focus on zines that address political and social issues. The collection does not include poetry.
ABC No Rio mounts seven to ten exhibitions a year at its Rivington Street gallery. Its Saturday Matinee features independent punk and hardcore music artists. Their Sunday afternoon open poetry readings have become a regular gathering, and their Sunday evening series of experimental and improvisational music presents electric, acoustic and jazz.
