Throughout 25 years of Urban Bush Women, Jawole Willa Jo Zollar and her dance company have worked to bring the untold and under-told histories and stories of disenfranchised people to light through dance and to serve the greater struggle for human rights. This program is focused on social commentary, resistance and protest, presenting an opportunity to move effectively toward the future by recognizing what we have gained from our own personal stories.
The performance will begin with the solo Give Your Hands to Struggle. Next witness Women’s Resistance, an excerpt from Les escailles de la memoire, which has only been performed in New York City once before. The performance will close with the fan favorite Walking with Pearl…Southern Diaries. Special guests include Somi and Carl Hancock Rux.
Join Harlem Stage for the final presentation of their 25th anniversary celebration as the ensemble continues to explore social commentary on resistance and protest.
