The New York Botanical Garden has created an 11-acre Azalea Garden, comprising one of the largest and most diverse displays and one of the most important collections of the plant in the world. Located in the heart of the Botanical Garden, the Azalea Garden is sited across a broad hillside punctuated by rock outcrops and shaded by stately native trees, many of them over 200 years old. The opening of the new garden, on May 7, 2011 , will be celebrated over two festival weekends: May 7–8 (Mother’s Day weekend) and May 14–15, 2011 .
Over Mother’s Day weekend, the garden features stilt walkers, old-time games such as croquet and badminton, crafts for kids and delicious picnic lunches for purchase.
