Providing a vivid panoramic portrait of an ever-changing neighborhood, this exhibit of the renown photographer Rebecca Lepkoff at the Whittaker Photo Gallery in the Educational Alliance features photographs spanning 30 years on the Lower East Side.
Rebecca Lepkoff has been eloquently documenting life on the Lower East Side since 1937 when she became involved with the Photo League. The 2006 publication of her monograph Life on the Lower East Side: Photographs by Rebecca Lepkoff, 1937-1950, has revived interest in her vintage street photographs. As an adolescent Rebecca Lepkoff studied dance at the Educational Alliance. As a young adult she returned to start the first black and white darkroom photography class for kids at the Educational Alliance Art School.
