Next Wave Festival. Brooklyn Babylon
$20-$40. Single tickets go on sale Sept 6
In a future Brooklyn, a tower is being built—the tallest in the world. All it needs is a carousel on top, spinning over the city below. Conjuring the seductive majesty of Fritz Lang’s Metropolis and the gritty social narrative of Walker Evans’ photography, acclaimed graphic artist Danijel Zezelj joins forces with Grammy-nominated composer Darcy James Argue’s jazz big band Secret Society to tell this story of extravagance and urban ambition. The result is a feast for the senses: a dusky cityscape—painted live onstage by Zezelj alongside projections of his animation—coagulates in giant swaths of black acrylic as Secret Society scores the rise of this dystopian city.
