Busted is a solo musical written and performed by Bianca Leigh, a trans woman and long-time Theatre Askew associated artist. The piece recounts, through song and narrative, Leigh’s experiences at the Manhattan House of Corrections after being arrested for prostitution. Busted turns the usual prison narrative, familiar from pop culture, on its head. Rather than serving as exotic background or salacious flavoring, a trans person is at the center of the story. Several songwriters working in different idioms have contributed original material to the show.
The play is a chilling reminder of how fragile the civil rights protections Americans take for granted actually are. Even a middle-class, educated, white person can be abused in jail, especially if she’s transsexual. In a country that locks up a greater percentage of its citizens than any other Western democracy, bearing witness to this reality is a service to everyone.
