Brooklyn Historical Society
A multi-media exhibition of photographs, words and video documents the residents of Tivoli Towers, a 35-year-old high-rise, affordable housing apartment building in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Increasing neighborhood gentrification motivated the building's owner to sell the property, thereby removing it from the city's housing program. In 2005 the residents sued to prevent this sale, and won. The landlord is now appealing the court's decision.
This project is produced by photographer and filmmaker, Delphine Fawundu Buford, along with filmmakers Scott Brathwaite and Anthony Clouden Jr. These three long-time friends and residents at Tivoli Towers felt the need to collect visual histories of their own community.
Brooklyn's colorful history, diverse cultures and unique neighborhoods come alive at the Brooklyn Historical Society (BHS). Located in an 1881 terra-cotta and brick landmark building in Brooklyn Heights, the society houses interactive, family-oriented exhibits and a reference library.
