Doug + Mike Starn on the Roof: Big Bambu

EXPIRED

Big Bambú installation view, March 2010
Big Bambú installation view, March 2010

Free with admission

Identical-twin brothers Mike and Doug Starn (b. 1961) construct a monumental bamboo structure in the form of a cresting wave that bridges realms of sculpture, architecture and performance. Visitors are meant to witness the creation and evolving incarnations of Big Bambú (which shares its name with Cheech and Chong’s favorite brand of rolling paper) as it is constructed throughout the spring, summer and fall by the artists and a team of rock climbers. It will ultimately measure 100 feet long by 50 feet wide by 50 feet high. Set against Central Park and its urban backdrop, the piece suggests the complexity and energy of an ever-changing living organism. This is the 13th-consecutive "single-artist" installation for the Cantor Roof Garden—assuming you consider the twin brothers a single art entity.
