Empire State Building and Observatory
The 86th floor observatory, 1,050 feet (320 meters) off the ground, has both a glass-enclosed area which is heated in winter and cooled in summer and spacious outdoor promenades on all four sides of the building. The observatory is reached by high speed, automatic elevators. High-powered binoculars are available on the promenades.
Also available is the New York SKYRIDE, an independently owned and operated simulated helicopter ride and virtual-reality movie theater. Closer to the ground, there are several art exhibits on view in the lobby, including items from actress Fay Wray's private collection of King Kong photographs, posters and memorabilia.
Since 1931, the Empire State Building has been the symbol of New York City and the cynosure of its skyline. Its observatories are a well-known tourist attraction since, on a clear day, they offer an 80-mile panoramic view of the city and the world beyond.
