  • Midsummer Night Swing: Kids Dance!

    Kids get to take a spin on the dance floor when Dancing Classrooms’ Rodney Lopez, seen in the documentary Mad Hot Ballroom, gives aspiring young dancers an engaging intro to ballroom dance. In just an hour and a half, dancers ages 6–10 will learn the basics of swing, merengue, tango, and a touch of Lopez’s passion, salsa.

  • Midsummer Night Swing: Big Band Swing Harlem Renaissance Orchestra

    The traditional Midsummer Night Swing finale, these guardians of Harlem’s musical traditions, HRO turns to the music of Basie, Ellington, Lionel Hampton, and of course Illinois Jacquet. The evening’s festivities include the awarding of the Ambassador Prize, an honor bearing the nickname Frankie Manning, one of lindy hop’s best dancers and master teachers.   • Midsummer Night Swing: Salsa/Charanga – Típica 73

    Torchbearers for four decades, Típica 73 operates where New York salsa meets Cuban charanga. Reassembling many of its veteran members, including Johnny “Dandy” Rodríguez, Sonny Bravo, Adalberto Santiago, Orestes Vilató and Nelson González, alongside the new generation, these New York legends will switch from a horn-powered salsa conjunto to the violin and flute driven charanga set.   • Midsummer Night Swing: Disco The Loser’s Lounge Presents: Donna Summer and the Divas of Disco

    Losers Lounge takes on disco and the hot stuff of Donna Summer and other mirror-ball era divas. Powered by ace session keyboardist Joe McGinty and his crack team of pop tributeers, Losers Lounge will hustle and boogie through the best of the ‘70s club scene. The Last Dance will happen with headphones on, as the Freedom Dance Party DJs spin during an after-hours silent disco. Dance Instructor: Maria Torres teaches Hustle DJ: Freedom Dance Party Dance.   • Midsummer Night Swing: Mambo / Salsa Arturo O’Farrill & the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra

    Grammy-winning pianist Arturo O’Farrill and his big band elevate Latin jazz standards to new heights. Tonight honors the Palladium’s Big 3, featuring the mambos of Tito Puente, Machito, and Tito Rodriguez, with some salsa dura surprises thrown in for good measure.   • Midsummer Night Swing: Jump Blues / Big Band Swing Ray Gelato with the City Rhythm Orchestra

    Saxophonist, singer, and bandleader Ray Gelato takes best of jump blues and the Italian songbook, Gelato and long-lost favorites by Paulo Conte, Fred Buscaglione, and Renato Carasone to their rightful place: lighting up the dancefloor with mambo italiano. Backing Gelato on this special evening is Philly’s swingin’ big band extraordinaire, the City Rhythm Orchestra. Dance Instructor: Paolo “Lindy” Lanna teaches Lindy Hop DJ: Ryan Mascaro.   • Midsummer Night Swing: Salsa La Sonora Carruseles

    Hailing from Medellin’s thriving scene, La Sonora Carruseles plays salsa with a distinctly Afro-Colombian flair. While paying tribute to the salsa brava of yesteryear, the band has developed its own take, with punchy horns, cool choruses, and layers of percussion that often flirt with boogaloo and cumbia.
