Founded in 1983, Los Pleneros de la 21 (LP21) is an East Harlem traditional performing arts nonprofit organization that fosters awareness and appreciation of Puerto Rican traditional expressions—particularly those of African descent: Bomba & Plena—as indispensable to a healthy community life.
LP21's Puerto Rican Music Project is a unique model of programs and initiatives which combine community programming and international touring efforts to promote performance practice and education about Puerto Rican traditional arts and bomba and plena; the project exposes bomba and plena to thousands internationally, and has inspired over three generations of organizations and traditional arts practitioners.
Activities offered year-round include local and touring residency project, education in bomba and plena, and the preservation of oral traditions.
LP21's programs have been successful in inspiring thousands worldwide simply by creating a unique dynamic of interactive performances, picaresque and informative narratives, original and re-interpreted musical repertoires and explosive dancing.
LP21's members, ranging from 18 to 70 years old embody the essence of transmitting oral and community practices, bringing elders and emerging practitioners in a single family. The School, located in LP21's home base, the Julia de Burgos Cultural Center, offers weekly Saturday classes in a unique family format, providing concurrent instruction for groups divided by ages (3 to 65+).
Bomba & Plena Un Paso Alante (since 2007) is an intensive Master Class clinic offered to emerging traditional artists and professional musicians interested in reaching an advanced level of bomba and plena knowledge and musicianship.
