A program at St. Mark's Church in-the-Bowery, the Poetry Project offers weekly reading and performance series, ongoing writing workshops, a quarterly newsletter, an annual literary magazine, the annual New Year's Day Marathon Reading, an extensive tape and document archive and general support for working poets. Since its founding in 1966, hundreds of poets, writers and performers—including Allen Ginsberg, Alice Walker, John Cage, Sam Shepard, Terri McMillan, Patti Smith and Yoko Ono—have shared their work during readings at the Poetry Project.
