The Greenbelt is Staten Island's largest physical feature, a 2,800-acre expanse of woodlands, wetlands and open fields that stretches through the middle of the borough. Founded in 1989, the Greenbelt Conservancy works in partnership with the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation to preserve and protect the Greenbelt for public use and enjoyment. The Greenbelt Nature Center is a museum staffed by educators and holds exhibits, classes and workshops on insects, wild animals, plants, geology, weather, forests, ponds and wetlands. Summer day camps, weekend nature workshops, family storytelling programs and school field trips meet here.
Maps are available for the walking trails that lead off from the center. The entire trail system extends 32 miles and includes various parks and refuges.
