Opened in 2002, the Museum of Sex is an institution with little precedent in the art world. Founded by Daniel Gluck, the museum devotes itself to the positive exploration and exhibition of human sexuality. The museum's first exhibition, NYCSEX: How New York Transformed Sex in America, looked closely at the evolution of eroticism in America and paved the way for future exhibitions examining BDSM, fetishes, pornography and erotica.
Action: Sex and the Moving Image
Ongoing Sex on the silver screen is the subject of this exhibition. Featuring early forms of moving image pornography, this exhibition looks at the history of sex on film and examines the moral panic surrounding the pornography industry as well as the positive and negative effects of sexploitation films such as Debby Does Dallas and Deep Throat.
Ongoing Michael Sullivan—artist, animator and prop designer—creates stop-motion animation using erotically altered fashion mannequins.
Let's Talk About You-Know-What
Ongoing Highlighting material and artifacts from different continents, cultures, times periods and media, the museum's permanent collection features over 15,000 artifacts, including works of art, photography, clothing and costumes, technological inventions and historical ephemera.
