The Walter Reade Theater is home to the Film Society of Lincoln Center. Programs range from international film series to retrospectives highlighting the work of top directors, actors, cinematographers, screenwriters and other film artists. The society sponsors the New York Film Festival, held in the much larger Alice Tully Hall and the New Directors/New Films series. The former, like its Cannes and Berlin counterparts, generally receives international media coverage, while the latter, held every winter at the Museum of Modern Art, its cosponsor, has given exposure to important new directors, actors and writers. There are also the summer retrospective series, the Real-to-Reel series for children and special events such as the screening of D. W. Griffith's restored masterwork Intolerance. The 268-seat cinema was designed by Davis, Brody and Associates and opened in 1991.
