Founded by Michael Capasso and Diane Martindale in 1981, Dicapo is an impresario or presenting outfit with no permanent company. In addition to presenting an annual season of fully-staged opera snd musical theater productions, Dicapo trains emerging singers and offers music education and performance opportunities for children. Since 1991 Dicapo Opera Theatre has performed in its own elegant and technically modern, 204-seat theater with fully equipped orchestra pit, spacious lobby, in-house scenery and costume shops and rehearsal spaces. Dicapo plans each season to include traditional and modern opera, musical theater, concerts and recitals. A typical season includes four mainstage opera productions, at least one of which is a work from the 20th century, with six to ten performances of each.

Past productions include Gounod’s Faust, Offenbach’s La Perichole, a musical tribute to Stephen Sondheim entitled Side by Side, and a special centennial celebration of Madame Butterfly which presented all three versions of Puccini’s opera: the original La Scala version of 17 February 1904 that was booed from the stage; the second revised production of May 28 of that same year; and finally the 1906 Paris version so well-known today.
