The great alto saxophone player Charlie Parker, otherwise known as "Bird," inspired the opening of the jazz club Birdland in 1949. Bird was a headliner there, as were other legends such as Count Basie and John Coltrane. The club has since relocated several times but today resides in the Times Square area again.
Aside from great jazz and Broadway artists, Birdland also features its own Birdland Big Band, led by Tommy Igoe. The house band plays every Friday, featuring jazz, Latin and Brazilian music from the world's best arrangers.
