apexart is a non-profit arts organization in Lower Manhattan. Founded by artist Steven Rand in 1994, it was conceived to offer opportunities to independent curators and emerging and established artists, as well as to challenge ideas about art, its practice and curation. apexart realizes this mission through exhibitions, an international residency program, a book publishing initiative, and public programs and events. To date it has worked with over 1,500 artists from around the world in its exhibition and residency programs.

Each year there are seven group exhibits, eight residencies (a one-month stay in New York) and at least 50 public lectures and performances. Vito Acconci, Martha Rosler, Dave Hickey, John Baldessari, Hou Hanru, Ute Meta Bauer, David Byrne, Janine Antoni, Kerry James Marshall, Jean-Hubert Martin are but some of the individuals who have shown or spoken at apexart.

Please check the apexart calender for event listings beyond normal gallery hours.

Get involved with apexart

  • Donations through apexart's Web site: As a small non-profit, it is you, our public, that allows us to remain in service to the creative community, generating the quality programming that we have become known for internationally. We want you to realize how much you actually do for us. For example: * If 50 people donate $100 each, one exhibition is paid for. * If 100 people donate $50 each, one residency is paid for. * If 120 people donate $25 each, we can produce 9,000 full-color exhibition brochures. * If another 330 people donate $10 each, we can send those brochures free of charge to over 7,000 people in more than 100 countries.

  • A Postcard from Afar: North Korea from a Distance

Wed, Jan 11, 2012 – Sat, March 10, 2012 The exhibit, curated by Mark Feary, attempts to give some form to North Korea, a country shrouded in secrecy and closed off from the rest of the world. Using the sparse accounts provided by declassified and military documents and the plethora of propaganda issued by the North Korean state, the artists in A Postcard from Afar create their own images and understanding of what lies beyond the DMZ.
