Bronx Museum of the Arts

BXMA

The Bronx Museum of the Arts was founded in 1971 to serve the ethnically diverse population of the Bronx and to stimulate community interest in the visual arts. Exhibitions and complementary public programs offer visitors the opportunity to learn about themselves, their heritage, history and culture while gaining insight into other cultural groups.

The museum has been housed since 1982 in a 33,000-square-foot converted synagogue. Of particular architectural interest is the three-story, glass-enclosed atrium serving as lobby and lounge. Works by 20th-century artists from Africa, Asia and Latin America, as well as American descendants from those regions, form the basis of a collection of more than 800 objects, including paintings, photographs, sculpture and works on paper.

FAMILY AFFAIR

A seasonal afternoon program that promotes the special bond between parents/guardians and their children (5 to 11 years old). Family Affair offers an ever-changing program that includes hands-on activities developed in collaboration with teaching artists, performances, guided tours, screenings, and many other surprises.

The Group Visits Program is the Bronx Museum’s main service to schools and community groups, providing both analytical and hands-on interactive experiences with contemporary art. Sessions are based on viewer participation with the goal to foster visual literacy and critical thinking.

Our tours combine thematic discussions of artworks on view with hands-on activities, which may include games, writing and media-based exercises.
Group discussions led by experienced museum educators introduce participants to contemporary art while enhancing critical thinking and communications skills.

Duration: 45 minutes. Rates: $100 (flat rate) for
groups up to 25 participants including chaperones or group leaders

In addition to a guided tour, a studio component is offered in which students work with museum educators to explore a variety of techniques including painting, drawing, photography and mixed media. By emphasizing concept, artistic experimentation and creative decision-making, studio sessions introduce to participants basic elements of the artistic process through
engaging exhibition-related projects.

Duration: 90 minutes. Rates: $150 (flat rate) for groups of up to 25 participants including chaperones or group leaders
