Founded in 1970 as an alternative art space, White Columns presents culturally diverse exhibitions, publishes artists books and limited editions and commissions large-scale installations by emerging artists.

Many of the country's prominent artists have had their first public exhibitions here—Gordon Matta-Clark, Alice Aycock, William Wegman and, more recently, Lorna Simpson, Andres Serrano, Ashley Bickerton and Cady Noland.
