Pan Asian Repertory Theatre was founded to celebrate Asian-American artistic expression on the stage. It became a new presence in New York in 1983 with the long Off-Broadway run of Yellow Fever. The company grew out of Tisa Chang’s experimental work at LaMama ETC with a core of Asian actors in such benchmark bilingual productions as the Peking Opera adaptation of Return of the Phoenix and the intercultural version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Memorable productions have included Lao She’s Teahouse, spanning 50 years of modern Chinese history; Ghashiram Kotwal, the Marathi musical exposé of Brahmin abuse of privilege; and the adaptation known as Shogun MacBeth. Other productions have included Mom, Dad, I’m Living With A White Girl by Marty Chan and China Doll by Elizabeth Wong.

Pan Asian Rep is now the largest producer of Asian-American theater, with regular international and national tours and a residency program. Every year, the company produces 2 Nights Only, a special event dedicated to exceptional works by emerging artists of all races. Works include everything from readings to solo performances to dance and performance pieces. Artists are selected from Pan Asian Rep classes, workshops and invitations to individual artists.
