A sign of how long it took to recognize women in American society is the fact that women only received the right to vote in 1920. Artist Georgia O’Keefe was 33; writer Edith Wharton was 58; and actress Sarah Bernhardt was 76.
Congress first approved Women’s History Month in 1987. This March, various groups honor women’s contributions to literature, art, music and more in special events. Other organizations, featured below, have made supporting female artists the focus of their work, year-round.
The focus for the 30th anniversary year of Women’s History Month is women who have brought environmental issues to the fore of the nation’s consciousness. To that end, National Park Service sites in New York will have special programs in March.
