More than any other day of the year in New York City, the streets and parks will be full of music on Sunday, June 21, when the sun stays up extra late to welcome the first day of summer.  For the ninth year running, Make Music New York celebrates the summer solstice—the longest day of the year—with hundreds of free concerts and jams in public spaces throughout the five boroughs.

Below are just a few outdoor and indoor free music events and concerts in unusual spaces (Make Music New York-related or not)  that kick off the summer season, from morning to night.

    Make Music New York’s Punk Island returns for its eighth year on June 21st, with nearly 100 punk bands, from as far away as the Philippines to as near as the East Village, all gathering on a Staten Island pier – just steps away from the Ferry Terminal — for a day-long punk experience.
