Birds: A Festival Inspired by Aristophanes
Birds: A Festival Inspired by Aristophanes

The Onassis Cultural Center of New York is putting on its third annual festival dedicated to The Birds – Aristophanes’ classic comedy, first performed in Athens in 414 BCE. Stretching from Brooklyn’s waterfront to the Upper West Side of Manhattan, the Onassis Cultural Center New York’s spring festival spans New York City in search of birds, both allegorical and real. Director Nikos Karathanos’ recreation of The Birds is both true to Aristophanes’ original and creatively adapted to reflect on contemporary concerns. The production at St. Ann’s Warehouse is the foundation of a broader festival of events at prominent cultural venues in New York City that will explore and celebrate themes emanating from The Birds. The festival includes several other events and exhibitions. Check the Onassis Cultural Center’s site for more information.
