Free admission (all visitors, all hours)
Starting June 9, Public Art Fund will bring Erwin Wurm’s Hot Dog Bus to Brooklyn Bridge Park, creating an absurd, yet approachable art experience that will encourage visitors to rethink the fundamental definitions of sculpture. Wurm has transformed a vintage Volkswagen Microbus into a bright yellow, overstuffed food truck from which free hot dogs will be served to park-goers on summer weekends. His choice of the hot dog hints at the gastronomic connections between the City’s most iconic street food and his Austrian homeland, while he considers the act of eating to be an additive sculptural process in its own right. Wurm’s manipulation of the bus’s form is both a lighthearted and deliberate gesture: its amusing shape is endearing, but also suggests another layer of meaning, calling attention to the allure of consumption in today’s culture. Erwin Wurm: Hot Dog Bus will be on view and serving hot dogs June 9 – August 26 at Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 1 on Saturdays and Pier 5 on Sundays, 12:00 – 6:00 pm.
