Meredith Monk’s newest music-theater work, Cellular Songs, premieres at Brooklyn Academy of Music’s (BAM) Harvey Theatre March 14-18. The event marks Monk’s 11th production at BAM, which began with the 1976 presentation of Quarry. The new piece will be performed by Meredith Monk & Vocal Ensemble—Monk, Ellen Fisher, Katie Geissinger, Allison Sniffin and Jo Stewart.  Weaving voice with movement, light, instrumental music, film and a site-specific video installation, Cellular Songs is a continuation of Monk’s works that explore our interdependent relationship with nature while seeking to evoke the ineffable. The work, at once playful and contemplative, draws inspiration from such cellular activity as layering, replication, division and mutation, and looks to underlying systems in nature that can serve as a prototype for human behavior in our tumultuous world.
