Poor People’s TV Room is a multidisciplinary work created by choreographer, dancer, and writer Okwui Okpokwasili in collaboration with visual designer Peter Born. Inspired in part by the Women’s War of 1929 in Nigeria, sometimes referred to as the “Women’s Egwu” (meaning dance or performance), the work focuses on cultural and historical memory and embodied protest practices. It weaves together movement, song and text in a discursive performance concerned with the entanglement of visibility and shared embodiment, with the spectral and insistent presence of forgotten women.
