Following a year of worldwide political and social activism, spearheaded by young people in this country and around the world, the new play with gospel music “Turning 15 on the Road to Freedom” begins its 2019 tour with a special engagement at The Riverside Church of New York on January 19 and 20, in celebration of Martin Luther King’s Birthday. This poignant and inspirational new play is a reminder that young people have used the power of their voices throughout history to bring about change. Based on the true story of Lynda Blackmon Lowery, the youngest person to march all the way from Selma to Montgomery in the 1965 Selma Voting Rights March, “Turning 15 on the Road to Freedom” was developed for the stage by Ally Sheedy and directed by Fracaswell Hyman. The stage adaptation is based on the award-winning memoir by Lynda Blackmon Lowery, as told to Elspeth Leacock and Susan Buckley, and illustrated by PJ Loughran.
