The Two-Cents Opera, with book, score and direction by Elodie Lauten, is about creative survival in an insecure world. In this new work, the composer relates to the experience of writing an opera as an adventure in the absurd.
Autobiographical slices of reality are woven in with surreal elements, from a twice-removed perspective that never lacks humor.

Performers will be baritone Gregg Lauterbach, sopranos Karmen Kluge and Jennifer Greene (who plays the Composer), mezzo soprano Mary Hurlbut and baritone Ulysses Borgia. Dancer Khoi Bao Le (currently with the White Wave Dance Company and Martha Graham School) will improvise choreography in the role of the Trickster. The instrumental accompaniment is provided by Jonathan Hirschman on guitar, Andrew Bolotowsky on flute, Rafael DeStella on contrabass, Bill Ruyle on percussion, Elodie Lauten on piano and alternatively a playback of programmed electronic tracks.
