The show presents amateur performers—dancers, musicians, daredevils and comedians, to name a few—in a vaudeville-like atmosphere. A true democracy, performances are evaluated based on the crowd’s reaction. Audience participation is encouraged.

Apollo Amateur Night debuted in 1934 and is the theater’s longest-running performance series. This talent competition has served as the model for Star Search and American Idol. Competitions are held nearly every Wednesday evening throughout the year, culminating with the Super Top Dog event, where past winners return for the playoffs.

The show begins with a pre-show jam fest with DJ Jess. Festivities are hosted by comedian Capone with live music by Ray Chew and the Crew. C.P. Lacey, the Apollo’s Executioner, sweeps bad talent off the stage.
