This multi-disciplinary, multi-cultural, artist-run organization in the Lower East Side launched the Vision Festival, New York’s premier free jazz/avant-garde jazz happening, in 1996. Since then, every June, musicians, dancers, spoken-word and visual artists have gathered for performances and creative collaborations in venues throughout Lower Manhattan.

In response to the shuttering of neighborhood performance spaces such as Tonic, Sin-é and CBGB, Arts for Art established Rise Up Creative Music and Arts (RUCMA) in 2007, a collective of musicians and artists which created the "Artist's Bill of Rights" to address creative, political and practical concerns regarding the cultural life of New York City—issues such as affordable housing, healthcare and adequate space for artists to present their work.
