Founded in 1916 by violin and piano duo David Mannes and Clara Damrosch Mannes, what started out as a community music school named the David Mannes School of Music has grown into a world-class conservatory of music. In addition to music instruction, Mannes offers hundreds of free concerts from September to May each year in its two concert halls or at venues in the New York metropolitan area, such as Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center. Performances feature the artistry of Mannes students, world-renowned faculty, alumni and special guests.
The college offers music instruction to children ages 4 to 18 in its Preparatory Division. The division provides students with a warm and open environment in the pre-professional program’s five sections: Program for the Very Young (ages 4 to 6); Junior Program (grades 1 to 8); Senior Program (grades 9 to 12); Theory Major (for students with private teachers who are interested in the college’s curriculum); and the Honors Program (for those in the Junior and Senior Programs who are nominated by their teachers).
