Turtle Bay Music School was founded in 1925 to provide high-quality musical instruction and related musical experiences to motivated students of all ages and levels of ability. The school offers affordable private and group instruction for toddlers through adults, as well as public concerts and recitals by faculty and advanced students.

Turtle Bay gives private and group instruction in chamber music, flute, guitar, harmonica, jazz, sight-singing, musical theater, percussion, Suzuki method and other subjects. Turtle Bay possesses special expertise in the Orff approach, which encourages children to learn the elements of music through enjoyable rhythm-and-movement-based group activities encompassing all styles of music. Other programs include Tuneful Tots (for preschoolers and parents or caregivers) and a certificate program that prepares advanced young musicians for conservatory auditions. A small but highly innovative music therapy program targets adolescents in the foster care system. New courses are frequently introduced, and an updated catalogue is available each fall; call to be placed on the mailing list. A scholarship fund and work-study program help those who need tuition assistance. Instruction may be offered in Spanish, Russian and other languages

Orff Schulwerk: Turtle Bay is allied with a limited number of New York City public schools to provide 35 to 45 minutes of weekly instruction in Orff Schulwerk (described above). This program enhances the classroom curriculum by focusing on music or skills that reinforce studies in subjects ranging from social studies to mathematics. It is especially effective at giving shy or disruptive children a positive experience and at encouraging non-English-speaking children to participate in class. Meet the Instruments: This program brings single- or multi-session, one-hour lecture-demonstrations by small classical and jazz ensembles into classrooms. Pre-session consultations with principals or teachers can be arranged as needed. Programs may be offered in Spanish.
