Started in 1987 by Julia Wolfe, David Lang and Michael Gordon, Bang on a Can has an unconventional approach to presenting music. Bang on a Can seeks out emerging composers as a means of exploring new musical terrain and realizes new works by way of a lively concert series at venues such as Lincoln Center and the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Bang on a Can includes a chamber ensemble, the Bang on a Can All Stars and an orchestra, the SPIT orchestra. The group also has a record label and hosts the Bang on a Can Festival and the Bang on a Can Summer Institute of Music, the nation's first educational residency program for emerging composers and performers interested in experimental music.
Customized student lecture-demonstrations, open rehearsals and question-and-answer sessions in cooperation with teachers are available.
