Since 1956, Learning Leaders (formerly the New York City School Volunteer Program) has been recruiting and training adults to provide individualized tutoring to students in schools citywide.
In addition to its core tutorial program, Learning Leaders operates projects designed to meet special needs and interests of the city’s public school children.
Art Works introduces third-grade public school students to four art forms: architecture, sculpture, painting and decorative art. Through a series of five class workshops and a guided visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, children learn to interpret, compare and discuss works of art. The program's emphasis is on developing visual literacy skills. Teachers receive a program guide with suggested follow-up activities for students.
