Every year, Batoto Yetu provides more than 300 hours of free dance instruction to underprivileged youth from the five boroughs of New York, Connecticut and New Jersey. Between 45-70 children aged 5-18 years participate in the classes, which are held every Saturday in Harlem. In addition, advanced members of the Batoto Yetu company travel as youth ambassadors across the nation and to countries around the world, including Portugal, Angola, Canada and Brazil. The group also hosts an in-schools program, which introduces elementary students to the principles of African dance and culture through its 14-week artist residencies. Batoto Yetu currently provides residencies to two schools: P.S.180/Hugo Newman College Preparatory School and P.S.145/The Bloomingdale School, both in Harlem.
