Working Theater was founded in 1985 to produce theater for and about working people (the majority of Americans working in the industrial, service and transportation industries). Working Theater seeks to engage workers who may be unable to afford commercial theater prices or feel that it does not resonate with their lives and experience. Toward that goal, the Theater offers low ticket prices and tells stories that reflect a diverse population of the working majority.

Through ticket subsidies, an active commissioning program, relevant productions, a successful grassroots audience development program and a pioneering arts-in-education program, the Theater serves a community too often overlooked in the off-Broadway world.
