Hildreth Meière and the mosaics of Emanu-El

From the time that Temple Emanu-El first opened its doors in 1929, it has been regarded as one of the world’s most majestic synagogues. As a result, several thousand visitors from around the world travel to see its sanctuaries and museum each year.

The synagogue features mosaics by distinguished Art Deco artist Hildreth Meière (1892 – 1961), for which she incorporated Jewish imagery into the eight-story-high arch encasing the bimah. There is also a museum with a collection that includes more than 650 pieces that date from the 14th century to the present day, which can be separated into two main categories: History of Emanu-El and Judaica. The museum also has special exhibitions, lectures and tours.
