American Spanish Dance Theatre is home to Andrea Del Conte's Danza España, one of the few New York dance companies dedicated exclusively to the flamenco. Founded in 1979 by the late Ms. Del Conte, a celebrated performer trained in Spain and the U.S., the company is made up of ten professional artists: five dancers, two guitarists, two singers and a percussionist. After Ms. Del Conte's passing in 2009, Mr. Yloy Ybarra was appointed as Artistic Executive Director in 2010. The company's annual winter season takes place at the Thalia Spanish Theatre in Queens. There is also a touring program, primarily to U.S. colleges and universities.
Danza España also develops new repertory, inviting choreographers from Spain and the U.S. to create works that add to the form, which already has many influences from Spain, North Africa and South America.
For more than 25 years Danza España has conducted workshops for school children throughout the city. Most recently, a year-round training program for girls aged 9 to 14 was inaugurated at New York's Lotus Music & Dance Studios.
