African Burial Ground National Monument

In May 1991, the General Services Administration unearthed the skeletal remains of nearly 400 individuals of predominantly African ancestry while preparing to erect a building in Lower Manhattan. The building was stopped, but these remains are on view in an interpretative center exploring the history of African-Americans in colonial New York.

African Burial Ground Visitor Center

Mon-Fri 9 am-5 pm. Closed federal holidays. The African Burial Ground Visitor Center contains exhibits and replica artifacts, and provides educational programs and interpretation of commemorative art commissioned for the African Burial Ground. Ranger-led tours that describe the unique artifacts and artwork at the African Burial Ground National Monument are scheduled weekdays at 10 am and 2 pm. Groups are urged to make reservations for tours to ensure adequate preparation and staff availability.

The After Dinner Opera Company performs American chamber works for general audiences and introduces young people to music and dance through in-school workshops.
