GOOD EVENING AND WELCOME TO NYC-ARTS I'M PAULA ZAHN AT THE TISCH WNET STUDIOS AT LINCOLN CENTER.

AS ALWAYS, IT'S OUR PLEASURE T BRING YOU THE BEST IN THE WORL OF ARTS AND CULTURE EXPLORIN THE BEST IN MUSIC AND DANCE, THEATRE AND FILM, AND THE VISUAL ARTS FROM CLASSIC TO CONTEMPORARY IN TONIGHT'S PROGRAM WE'LL TAK STOCK OF SOME OF MOVIE HISTORY AS IT TAKES CENTER STAGE RIGHT NOW ON BROADWAY.

IN THE HISTORY OF CINEMA, NO STUDIO CONTRIBUTED MORE TO CREATE THE BIG BLOCK- BUSTER MUSICAL THAN METRO GOLDWYN MAYER AND NO OTHER COMPANY IS AS RESPONSIBLE FOR ADDING TO TH CANON KNOWN AS THE AMERICAN SONG BOOK AS MGM.

ONE BIG HIT WAS THE FILM 'AN AMERICAN IN PARIS.

IT WAS RELEASED IN 1951 AND WO 6 OSCARS, BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY IT BECAME ONE OF THE WORLD'S BEST-LOVED MUSICALS.

IT STARRED GENE KELLY AND NEWLY DISCOVERED LESLIE CARON.

THIS WEEK 'AN AMERICAN IN PARIS' OPENED ON BROADWAY NOT AS REMAKE OR RE- CREATION BUT AS AN 'ALL NEW' MUSICAL VERSION FO THE STAGE.

FANS OF THE MOVIE WILL CERTAINLY FIND IT FAMILIAR BUT THE SHOW'S DIRECTOR AN CHOREOGRAPHER, CHRISTOPHER WHEELDON, IS A NEW NAME ON BROADWAY HE WAS CLASSICALLY TRAINED A LONDON'S ROYAL BALLET SCHOOL BEFORE DANCING WITH THE NEW YORK CITY BALLET.

IN 2000, HE STOPPED PERFORMING IN ORDER TO FOCUS ON HIS CHOREOGRAPHY. WE INVITED HIM T TALK ABOUT PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE PROJECTS.

CHRISTOPHER WHEELDON, WELCOME.

CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR BROADWAY OPENING.

I AM TRYING TO PUT MYSELF INSIDE THE HEADS OF YOU AND YOU AMERICAN PRODUCERS AND IMAGINE THE KIND OF PRESSURE YOU MUS FEEL. GIVE ME A SENSE OF HOW THIS ALL CAME TOGETHER

THE PRODUCERS APPROACHED ME PROBABLY ABOUT THREE YEARS AGO NOW, AND PROPOSED THIS IDEA OF THE FIRST-EVER STAGE VERSION O 'AN AMERICAN IN PARIS.

AND, IT TOOK THEM A WHIL ACTUALLY TO CONVINCE ME THAT STEPPING INTO THE DIRECTORIA SHOES WAS SOMETHING THAT I WOULD BE ABLE TO DO, BECAUSE, YO KNOW, I'M A CHOREOGRAPHER AN I'VE WORKED FOR MANY YEARS WIT THE BALLET, AND ALTHOUGH I DIRECT STORIES THROUGH DANCE THE LANGUAGE OF DIRECTING ACTORS IS SOMETHING VERY DIFFERENT.

WHAT ULTIMATELY CONVINCED YOU THAT YOU COULD MAKE THAT TRANSITION, AND THAT IT WOULD BE A SUCCESSFUL ONE

I THINK ACTUALLY IT WAS JUS ABOUT SHOWING ME THAT THEY HAD THE CONFIDENCE IN ME, ACTUALLY

THERE WERE SO MANY FIRSTS INVOLVED IN BRINGING THIS TO BROADWAY. WHAT WAS THE MOS DAUNTING CHALLENGE THAT YO FACED?

THERE'S A GREAT DEAL OF EXPECTATION BECAUSE THIS MOVIE IS A GREAT CLASSIC ♪♪ FROM THE START WE ALL DECIDED AS A CREATIVE TEAM THAT WE WERE RECREATE THE MOVIE, BECAUSE IT'S IMPOSSIBLE IT WAS A GREAT MOMENT IN TIME, AND GENE KELLY AND LESLIE KORAN, GREAT, GREAT ARTISTS THIS IS WONDERFUL MUSIC AND WONDERFUL SCORE, AND A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO FIND CONTEMPORARY WAY OF PUTTING THIS ON THE STAGE AND GIVING IT A NEW LIFE, AND FINDING NE UNDISCOVERED STARS

HOW BIG OF A RISK DID YOU THINK IT WOULD BE TO TAKE TW WELL-KNOWN DANCERS AND CASTING THEM AS YOUR LEADS; DANCERS WH HAD NEVER ACTED BEFORE

A BIG RISK FOR SURE, BUT WE WERE CONFIDENT THAT WE'D FOUND THESE TWO PERFORMERS- ROBERT FAIRCHILD AND LEANNE COPE- NOT WITHOUT A GREAT DEAL O SEARCHING. IT WAS A FAIRLY COMPLICATED AUDITION PROCESS AND WE AUDITIONED IN LONDON, W AUDITIONED ALL OVER THE STATES WE REALLY DID LOOK FOR THESE GUYS BECAUSE WITHOUT THEM IT DOESN'T REALLY MAKE SENSE.

WHAT DID YOU SEE IN THEM THAT YOU DIDN'T SEE IN THE OTHE DANCERS AND ACTORS WHO AUDITIONED

I WAS CONFIDENT THAT I COUL FIND TWO GREAT DANCERS THA COULD MATCH THEIR ABILITIES AS DANCERS WITH GREAT ABILITIES T ACT AND TO SING.

IN THIS CASE IT WAS NECESSAR FOR US TO FIND REAL TRIPLE THREATS AND IN THE CASE OF LEANNE WE CALL HER THE QUADRUPLE THREAT, BECAUSE SHE NOT ONLY HAS TO DANCE BEAUTIFULLY, SING AND ACT BEAUTIFULLY, BUT SHE ALS HAS TO DANCE ON POINTE, WHICH OF COURSE MOST BROADWAY DANCERS DON'T HAVE THAT ABILITY.

TALK TO ME ABOUT LEANNE COPE.

IT'S ALMOST AS THOUGH SHE' REINHABITING THE ROLE OF LESLI CARON.

WELL LEANNE HAS A VER INTERESTING STORY.

I'VE KNOWN HER SINCE SHE WAS 11 YEARS OLD AT THE ROYAL BALLET SCHOOL AND SHE HAS ALWAYS BEEN THIS MAGICAL PRESENCE ON STAGE AND SOMEBODY SAID TO ME WHEN W WERE ON THE SEARCH FOR LIS, 'I HEARD LEANNE SINGING AT TH SCHOOL OF MUSIC COMPETITION WHEN SHE WAS 12 YEARS OLD AND SHE HAD THIS BEAUTIFUL SOPRANO VOICE.'

SO I TRACKED HER DOWN BETWEE PERFORMANCES OF 'SWAN LAKE' AT THE ROYAL BALLET IN LONDON, AN I SAID LEANNE 'HAVE YOU EVER SUNG?' AND SHE SAID 'WELL YO KNOW JUST AT SCHOOL, BUT NEVER IN FRONT OF ANYONE.'

I SAY 'WELL DO YOU SING AT HOME' SHE SAYS 'AH I SING IN THE SHOWER SOMETIMES.'

SO I GRABBED HER AND I TOOK HE INTO THE CHANGING ROOM, AN FULLY CLOTHED OF COURSE, I PUT HER IN THE SHOWER, BECAUSE GREAT ACOUSTICS IN THE SHOWER.

WE ALL THINK WE SOUND GOOD IN THE SHOWER

SO SHE LAUGHED AND SHE SUNG A LITTLE BIT OF THE 'MAN I LOVE' AND IT WAS VERY RAW BUT VERY BEAUTIFUL SOUND. AND SHE NEVER READ A BOOK SCENE IN HER LIFE, I SAT HER DOWN, I GAVE HER THE SCRIPT, SHE READ FOR ME.

AND SHE DOES SING AS WELL OUT OF THE SHOWER AS SHE DOES IN THE SHOWER

EVEN MORE BEAUTIFULLY OUT O THE SHOWER, THEN SHE SINGS I THE SHOWER. FOR HER IT'S A NEW DIRECTION AND SHE'S VERY EXCITED ABOUT THE CHALLENGES OF ACTING AND SINGING.

SHE CUT HER HAIR, SO SH LOOKS UNCANNILY LIKE LESLI CARON.

SHE DOES AND YOU KNOW. WE ALL KEPT SAYING, 'WERE NOT LOOKING FOR CARBON COPIES OF THESE GREAT ARTISTS' AND OF COURSE LEANN SHOWS UP WE DIDN'T CHOOSE HER BECAUSE SHE LOOKS LIKE SHE COULD BE LESLIE CARON'S GRANDDAUGHTER, BUT SHE CERTAINLY DOES HAVE AN UNCANNY RESEMBLANCE.

ROBERT FAIRCHILD IS A WONDERFUL DANCER AND HAVE YO WORKED WITH HIM AT THE CIT BALLET

I HAD AND AGAIN, I SAW ROBB GROW UP THROUGH THE SCHOOL O AMERICAN BALLET AND HAD MADE SEVERAL BALLET'S FOR HIM AT NE YORK CITY BALLET AND HE EXCELS ON STAGE AS AN INCREDIBLY ALL-AMERICAN, CHARISMATIC PERFORMER.

ALWAYS EXCELLED IN THE JAZZIER BALLETS LIKE BALANCHINE' SLAUGHTER ON 10TH AVENUE, HE TAPS IN THAT AND I JUST THOUGH FOR SURE THERE MUST BE A SINGING VOICE AND AN ACTOR IN THERE AS WELL. AND THERE IS YOU KNOW THEY'RE UP THERE ACTING WITH REALLY SOME OF THE FINEST ACTORS ON BROADWAY AND THEY HAVE TO HOLD THEIR OWN, THERE'S N HIDING WHEN YOU'VE GOT VIANNE COX AND BRANDON URANOWITZ AND MA WANESSAN, AND JILL PACE AS YOU FELLOW LEADS YOU HAVE TO STEP UP AND ACT ON A VERY HIGH LEVEL

I KNOW HISTORICALLY YOU HAVEN'T GIVEN MUCH IMPORT TO EITHER GREAT REVIEWS, MEDIOCRE REVIEWS OR EVEN BAD REVIEWS, THIS SHOW IS BRAND NEW T BROADWAY, BUT YOU HAD A PRETTY GOOD SENSE WHEN YOU OPENED I PARIS THAT THE SHOW WAS GOING TO WORK, YOU GOT RAVE REVIEWS DID YOU READ THOSE

I DID READ THEM UNFORTUNATELY MY FRENCH ISN' GOOD ENOUGH TO REALLY BE ABLE TO TRANSLATE THEM ACCURATELY, BUT THE HEADLINE CERTAINLY SUGGESTED THAT THEY WERE GOOD.

IT WAS A BIG RISK FOR US TO TAKE THE SHOW TO PARIS. VERY EXCITING AND A VERY SORT OF BUZZY AND ROMANTIC THING ABOUT OPENING 'AN AMERICAN IN PARIS' IN PARIS, BUT WE'RE TAKING A STORY WHERE W REALLY DO DEAL WITH SOME OF TH MORE COMPLEX PARTS OF FRENCH HISTORY.

AN IN A BIG ANNIVERSARY YEAR O THE LIBERATION OF PARIS FROM THE NAZIS, SO WE WERE NERVOUS ABOU THAT IT WAS VERY ENCOURAGING TO BE SO EMBRACED BY THE CITY OF PARIS.

I FEEL THAT THEY RESPECTED THA WE TOOK OUR STORY AND GROUNDED IT IN MORE TRUTHFUL HISTORICAL CONTEXT.

THE MUSIC HAS BEEN DESCRIBE AS THE HOLY GRAIL OF GERSHWIN.

ABSOLUTELY, WELL WE HAV QUITE A LOT OF THE MUSIC THA PEOPLE WILL RECOGNIZE FROM THE MOVIE BECAUSE THE GERSHWIN'S HAVE BEEN SO INCREDIBLY AND SORT OF GIVEN US CARTE BLANCHE WITH THE SONGBOOK ♪♪ IT'S THIS WONDERFUL MIX OF SON AND THIS GREAT, LUSH, CINEMATI ORCHESTRAL MUSIC

JUST TO BE CLEAR THIS IS BROADWAY MUSICAL YOU'VE GOT A LOT OF DANCING, BUT VERY MUCH IN THE TRADITION OF BROADWAY SHOW.

ABSOLUTELY, THE BOOK SCENES AND SONGS AND THE DANCE AR EQUAL PARTNERS IN THIS SHOW.

AND THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF DANCE IN THE SHOW A WELL THERE'S TAP AND JAZZ AND CONTEMPORARY BALLET, SO I GOT TO FLEX A LOT OF DIFFERENT MUSCLES.

WE HAVE TO COMPRESS YOU YEARS AS A DANCER HERE IN NE YORK FOR THE SAKE OF TIME BU WHAT DID 'AFTER THE RAIN REPRESENT TO YOU AS CHOREOGRAPHER?

A BEAUTIFUL PIECE, YOU CREATED FOR WENDY WHALEN JACQUE SOTO

THANK YOU GOSH 'AFTER THE RAIN' IS S INTERESTING.

JACQUE AND WENDY AND I MADE THAT PIECE VERY QUICKLY AND SOMETIME THAT HAPPENS, SOMETIMES IT'S JUST THE RIGH MOMENT IN TIME. AND THE FINA SEASON OF JACQUE SOTO'S GREA CAREER WITH THE NEW YORK CIT BALLET AND WE HAD SPENT MANY YEARS TOGETHER AS A COUPLE AND WE WEREN'T TOGETHER AT THE TIM BUT I WANTED TO MAKE SOMETHING FOR HIM AND FOR WENDY TO CELEBRATE THE TWO OF THEM AS ARTISTS, THEY HAD A WONDERFU PARTNERSHIP. BUT REALLY I HAD NO IDEA IT WOULD BE THE SUCCESS THAT IT WAS OR THAT IT WOULD AFFECT PEOPLE IN THE WAY THAT IT DOES AS A PIECE.

I WAS JUST REALLY PLEASED WITH IT STRUCTURALLY AND THEN W PREMIERED IT AND PEOPLE SAW SO MANY BEAUTIFUL AND DEEP THINGS WITHIN THIS PAS DE DEUX.

WHERE IS THIS MAGNIFICENT VOICE OF YOURS GOING TO TAKE YOU NEXT

YOU KNOW THIS EXPERIENCE ON BROADWAY HAS ABSOLUTELY THROWN ALL THE DOORS AND WINDOWS OPEN FOR ME CREATIVELY.

I FEEL LIKE I HAVE AND EXCITEMENT AGAIN AND A RENEWED SENSE OF COURAGE ACTUALLY.

BECAUSE YOU WORK HARD AND YOU'RE THE UP AND COMER AND THEY'RE BEHIND YOU AND PUSHING FOR YOU AND YOU REACH A CERTAIN LEVEL OF SUCCESS, AND IT SOUNDS LIKE CLICHE BUT IT'S SO TRUE.

ONCE YOU'RE AT THE TOP IT'S LONG WAY DOWN, YOU DO FEEL THE PRESSURES OF SUCCESS AND THAT' THE WAY OF THE WORLD

WELL IT HAS BEEN AN ABSOLUT PLEASURE TO TALK WITH YOU.

WE HOPE YOU HAVE A GOOD, LONG, RUN ON BROADWAY AND CONTINUE GOOD LUCK.

THANK YOU
