> GOOD EVENING AND WELCOME T 'NYC-ARTS.

I'M PHILIPPE de MONTEBELLO O LOCATION AT THE MORGAN LIBRARY AND MUSEUM TODAY, MORE THAN A CENTURY AFTER ITS FOUNDING IN 1906, THE MORGAN SERVES AS A MUSEUM, INDEPENDEN RESEARCH LIBRARY, MUSICAL VENUE, ARCHITECTURAL LANDMARK AND HISTORIC SITE.

IT'S WONDERFUL TO BE HERE IN THIS MAGNIFICENT LIBRARY THE 'HISTORIC' PORTION OF TH MORGAN NOW COMBINED WITH THE CONTEMPORARY FACILITY DESIGNED BY RENZO PIANO IT'S A PLACE I HAVE ENJOYE VISITING FOR MANY YEARS.

ITS HOLDINGS REFLECT THE TASTE AND PHILOSOPHY OF ITS FOUNDER, PIERPONT MORGAN, THE RENOWNE FINANCIER, COLLECTOR AND CULTURAL BENEFACTOR.

THE COLLECTION ENCOMPASSES MANUSCRIPTS, BOOKS, DRAWINGS AND ARTWORK RANGING FROM MICHELANGELO TO DEGAS, MOZART TO STRAVINSKY, DICKENS TO HEMINGWAY, AND GUTENBERG BIBLE TO THE STORY OF BABAR.

AS A SUPERB REPOSITORY O HISTORY, ART AND LITERATURE OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION FRO 4000 BC TO THE 21st CENTURY, THE MORGAN OCCUPIES A UNIQUE POSITION IN THE CULTURAL LIFE OF NEW YORK CITY.

CURRENTLY ON VIEW AT THE MORGA IS AN EXHIBITION THAT DISPLAYS A VISUAL ART FORM THAT IS BOUND TO THE WORLD OF LITERATURE.

AT THE TURN OF THE 20th CENTURY, NEW PRINTING TECHNOLOGIE THREATENED TO DESTROY THE AR AND CRAFT OF BOOK ILLUSTRATION 'MEDIUM AS MUSE: WOODCUTS AN THE MODERN BOOK' LOOKS AT TH ARTISTS WHO SOUGHT TO RECLAIM LOST GOLDEN AGE OF WOODCUT ILLUSTRATION AT THE SAME TIME, THEY MOVED BOOK ILLUSTRATION AND TH WOODCUT INTO THE MODERN WORLD.

NOW LET'S HEAR FROM CURATO SHEELAGH BEVAN ABOUT THIS UNIQUE SHOW

'MEDIUM AS MUSE: WOODCUTS AND THE MODERN BOOK' IS AN EXHIBITION DRAWN ALMOST ENTIRELY FROM THE MORGAN LIBRARY' PRINTED BOOKS COLLECTION THA EXAMINES WORKS RELATED TO TH WOODCUT REVIVAL, A PERIO ROUGHLY DATING FROM 1890 TO TH LATE 1920s, SPANNING THE EXQUISITE WORKS OF WILLIAM MORRIS AND THE ARTS AN CRAFTS MOVEMENT THROUGH TH INNOVATIVE PROTO-GRAPHIC NOVEL IN WOODCUTS BY FRANS MASEREE AND LYND WARD.

THE WOODCUT REVIVAL INVOLVED ARTISTS, PRINTERS AND PUBLISHERS WHO WERE WORKING OUTSIDE THE MAINSTREAM THEY WERE DEEPLY ENGAGED WIT THE FORM OF THE BOOK AT PROVOCATIVE MOMENT IN IT HISTORY.

19th CENTURY TECHNOLOGIES, PHOTOGRAPHY IN PARTICULAR, HAD DRAMATICALLY CHANGED THE NATUR OF ILLUSTRATION AND PRINTE MATTER AND FOR MANY THIS DIMINISHED NOT ONLY THE QUALITY AND THE CLARITY OF BOOK ILLUSTRATION BUT CHANGED THE EXPERIENCE OF INDIVIDUAL CRAFTSMEN WHO HAD HISTORICALLY PRODUCED THE BOOK BY HAND.

BY LOOKING TO THE BOOK'S PAST, THESE ARTISTS REDISCOVERED THE MEDIUM AS A MEANS TO INVESTIGATE THE ARTISTIC POSSIBILITIES O THE BOOK AND TO ELEVATE IT TO WORK OF ART.

WILLIAM MORRIS WAS REALL INSPIRED BY LATE MEDIEVA NORTHERN EUROPEAN PRINTING MORRIS' MASTERPIECE WA SOMETHING THAT IN THE BOOK WORLD WE REFER TO FAMILIARLY AS 'THE KELMSCOTT CHAUCER,' WHICH WA THE COMPLETE WORKS OF GEOFFREY CHAUCER WHICH MORRIS PRINTED I 1896 THE MORGAN'S COPY IS ONE O 13 PRINTED ON VELUM.

MORRIS WORKED REALLY HARD WITH HIS FRIEND, THE PRE-RAPHAELITE PAINTER EDWARD BURNE-JONES, TO COME UP WITH DESIGNS THAT WOUL COMPLETELY HARMONIZE WITH TH ORNAMENT AND THE TYPE THAT H HAD BEEN PLANNING FOR THE BOOK HE HAD A WHOLE TEAM OF PEOPL WORKING ON BURNE-JONES'S DESIGNS.

THEY TOOK PHOTOGRAPHS OF HIS DRAWINGS AND THEN PAINTED OVER THEM AN ENGRAVER WORKED WITH TH ARTIST HIMSELF TO FIGURE OUT WHAT THEY COULD DO TO SIMPLIFY THE DRAWING IN ORDER T TRANSLATE IT INTO AN IMAGE MOR APPROPRIATE FOR THE WOODBLOC MEDIUM IN THE SECTION OF THE EXHIBITION WE CALL 'PICTURING THE MODERN, WE SEE A WIDE VARIETY OF INNOVATIONS HAPPENING.

YOU HAVE ARTISTS WHO ARE EXPLOITING THE MEDIUM FOR TH FIRST TIME, REALLY, FOR ORIGINAL WORKS OF ART ARTISTS LIKE FELIX VALLOTTON WHO EMBRACED THE PRIMITIVE AND THE BRUTAL ASPECTS OF TH MEDIUM THE WORDLESS NOVEL WAS A GENRE OF VISUAL LITERATURE INVENTED IN 1918 BY THE BELGIAN WOODCUTTER FRANS MASEREEL A WORDLESS NOVEL IS A GROUP OF PRINTS, USUALLY USING WOODCUTS WOOD ENGRAVINGS, OCCASIONALL OTHER MEDIUMS, THAT ARE BOUN TOGETHER IN A PARTICULAR ORDER TO BE READ AT THE TIME, PEOPLE COMPARED THEM TO FILM, BUT THEY ARE REALLY A MUCH MORE INTERACTIVE FORM OF READING.

LYND WARD CREATED MANY WORDLES NOVELS DURING HIS CAREER HE FIRST ATTAINED SUCCESS IN AMERICA AS THE AUTHOR OF 'GOD' MAN,' WHICH WAS THE FIRS WORDLESS NOVEL BY AN AMERICA ARTIST IN 'WILD PILGRIMAGE,' HE I LOOKING AT THE CONTRAST BETWEE THE EXPERIENCE OF THE INDIVIDUAL IN THE INDUSTRIALIZED CITY VERSUS THE EXPERIENCE IN PASTORAL AMERICA AND AT SOME POINTS, WARD CHANGES THE COLOR OF THE WOOD ENGRAVINGS FROM BLACK ON WHITE TO SIENN COLOR.

AND AT THAT MOMENT, YOU'RE SEEING THE INTERIOR WORLD OF THE PROTAGONIST, SOME OF WHICH I VERY DARK.

THE EXHIBITION FEATURES A FILM SHOWING WARD DESIGNING, CREATING AND PRINTING A PROOF FROM ONE OF HIS WOODBLOCKS IT'S A CHANCE FOR VISITORS T WITNESS THIS VERY INTIMATE DIRECT RELATIONSHIP AN ARTIS CAN HAVE WITH THE CREATION O HIS WORK AND ITS DIREC IMPRESSION ONTO THE PRINTE PAGE WARD REALLY SYNTHESIZES SO MAN OF THE IDEAS IN THIS EXHIBITIO AND THAT RUN THROUGH ALL OF TH ARTISTS FROM THE ARTS AND CRAFTS MOVEMENT, UP UNTIL CONTEMPORAR ARTISTS LIKE ART SPIEGELMAN AN ERIC DROOKER TODAY FOR MANY OF THESE ARTISTS, THE SAW IT AS SOME WAY TO GET AT THE TRUTH OF THE VERY DISJOINTED NATURE OF MODERN LIFE, THA CRUDE AND PRIMITIVE, BRUTAL AN NON-NATURALIST EXPRESSIONS WHICH YOU COULD GET FROM THE WOODCUT I'M SHEELAGH BEVAN, ANDREW W MELLON ASSISTANT CURATOR AT TH MORGAN LIBRARY AND MUSEUM.

I HOPE YOU WILL COME BY TH MUSEUM IN THE NEXT FEW MONTHS TO SEE 'MEDIUM AS MUSE: WOODCUT AND THE MODERN BOOK.
